What is a post and core?

A post and core rebuilds a root-treated tooth that has lost too much of its structure to hold a crown on its own. A small post is placed into the already-treated root canal, and it anchors a core of filling material that recreates the base of the tooth — giving the crown something strong to sit on. At SmilePath Dental in Mansarovar, Jaipur, this is usually done soon after your root canal, often in the same visit as preparing the tooth for its crown, and it can save a tooth that would otherwise need removing. Pricing is transparent with easy EMI options, and you'll get an exact quote at your free consultation.

What to expect

We take an X-ray to check the root canal filling and the length and shape of the root. If needed, we numb the tooth, then carefully make space inside the treated canal and cement a small post — usually a tooth-coloured fibre post, sometimes metal for back teeth.

We then build up a core of strong filling material around the post to recreate the tooth's base, and shape it ready for the crown. Often we take the scan for your crown in the same visit, so the final tooth is ready sooner.

Who it's for

A post and core is for anyone in Jaipur with a root-treated tooth that has broken down badly — very little tooth left above the gum, a tooth that snapped after a root canal, or a front tooth that needs a crown but has little structure to support it. It's the step that makes a lasting crown possible.

Who can benefit
  • A root-treated tooth with very little structure left

  • A tooth that broke at or near the gum after a root canal

  • A front tooth that needs a crown after root canal treatment

  • A large old filling in a root-treated tooth that keeps failing

  • Wanting to save a tooth rather than extract it

Aftercare tips

  • Avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth until the final crown is fitted

  • Get the crown placed promptly — the post and core is the foundation, the crown is the protection

  • Brush and floss normally around the tooth

  • Call us if the temporary crown feels loose or comes off

  • Keep regular checkups so we can monitor the tooth and crown
