What are growth modification appliances?

Growth modification appliances are orthodontic devices used while a child is still growing — usually between about 7 and 12 — to guide how the jaws develop. An expander can widen a narrow upper jaw, and functional appliances can encourage a lower jaw that's set too far back to grow forward. Because they work with the child's natural growth, they can correct problems that are much harder to fix later, often shortening future braces treatment or avoiding jaw surgery in adulthood. At SmilePath Dental in Mansarovar, Jaipur, they're planned by our Invisalign-certified orthodontists. Your child's first checkup is free.

What to expect

It starts with an orthodontic assessment — ideally around age 7 — with photos and X-rays to see how your child's jaws and teeth are developing. If early treatment will help, our orthodontist explains which appliance suits the problem (for example an expander for a narrow upper jaw, or a functional appliance for a lower jaw that's set back).

The appliance is custom-made and fitted, and we see your child regularly to adjust it and track progress. Some children need braces later to fine-tune the teeth, but the bigger jaw correction is already done.

Who it's for

Growth modification is for children in Jaipur, typically 7–12, whose jaws aren't developing in balance — a narrow upper jaw or crossbite, upper front teeth that stick out because the lower jaw is set back, an underbite tendency, or crowding that's already showing. Catching these early gives the best, simplest result.

Who can benefit
  • A child with a narrow upper jaw or crossbite

  • Upper front teeth sticking out (lower jaw set back)

  • An underbite or a jaw that seems to be growing unevenly

  • Crowding already showing in the early adult teeth

  • Parents wanting to reduce future braces or surgery
