White or Brown Spots on Teeth in Jaipur? It's Often Fluorosis

White or Brown Spots on Your Teeth? In Jaipur, It's Often Dental Fluorosis
If you've noticed white patches, chalky streaks, or brown stains on your teeth that whitening toothpaste just won't shift, you're not alone — and here in Jaipur, there's a very specific reason it's so common. It's called dental fluorosis, and it's closely linked to the water many of us in Rajasthan grew up drinking.
At SmilePath Dental in Mansarovar, we see fluorosis every week. The good news: once you understand what's causing it, there are proven ways to restore a bright, even smile. Here's everything you need to know.
What is dental fluorosis?
Dental fluorosis is a change in the appearance of tooth enamel caused by taking in too much fluoride while the teeth are still forming (roughly birth to age 8). It ranges from barely-visible white flecks to noticeable white patches, and in more severe cases, yellow-brown mottling and pitting of the enamel.
Importantly, fluorosis affects teeth that were developing during childhood — so it usually shows up on adult teeth even though the cause happened years earlier. It is not decay, and it isn't caused by poor brushing.
Why is fluorosis so common in Jaipur and Rajasthan?
This is where our region matters. Rajasthan has the highest number of fluorosis cases in India — an estimated 40 lakh people are affected — because a lot of our groundwater is naturally high in fluoride. In parts of Jaipur district, fluoride in borewell and hand-pump water has been measured at 2 to 15 ppm, far above the safe limit of around 1 ppm.
The geology is the culprit: Rajasthan's arid climate and fluoride-bearing rock lead to high fluoride leaching into groundwater. Families who relied on borewell or hand-pump water — common across many Jaipur neighbourhoods and the villages people have moved to Mansarovar from — often took in more fluoride than is safe during childhood, and their teeth show it today.
If you grew up drinking untreated groundwater anywhere in Rajasthan, mild fluorosis is genuinely common — and nothing to be embarrassed about.
How to tell fluorosis apart from other stains
Fluorosis: symmetrical white or brown patches/streaks, often on several teeth, present since the adult teeth came in.
Cavities/decay: usually a single spot that grows, may cause sensitivity or pain.
Surface stains (tea, coffee, tobacco, paan): more even yellowing/browning that a professional cleaning can improve.
Only an exam can confirm it — but if the marks have been there "as long as you can remember" and appear on multiple teeth, fluorosis is the likely answer.
Will teeth whitening remove fluorosis? (The honest answer)
Usually not — and this is the most important thing to know. Standard teeth whitening lifts surface stains; fluorosis is inside the enamel. In fact, whitening can sometimes make white fluorosis spots look more obvious at first. So if a clinic promises to "whiten away" your fluorosis in one session, be cautious.
The right treatment depends on how mild or severe your fluorosis is.
Treatments that actually work for fluorosis
Depending on your case, an aesthetic dentist may recommend:
Enamel microabrasion — for mild white spots; gently polishes away the thin affected surface layer.
Resin infiltration — a modern technique that blends white spots into the surrounding enamel without drilling.
Composite bonding / laminates — tooth-coloured material shaped over the marks; great value for moderate cases.
Porcelain veneers — for more severe brown mottling; thin custom shells that give a completely even, natural smile.
Professional whitening — sometimes used alongside the above to even out overall shade (not on its own for fluorosis).
At SmilePath, our aesthetic dentist assesses your enamel and recommends the least invasive option that will actually give you an even, natural result — not the most expensive one.
Protecting your children's teeth from fluorosis
Prevention is simple and worth it:
Use RO-filtered or low-fluoride water for young children if your supply is high in fluoride (RO removes fluoride effectively).
Use only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for kids under 6, and teach them to spit, not swallow.
Get a paediatric dental check so fluoride intake can be guided during the tooth-forming years.
If you're a parent in Mansarovar, our team can advise on safe fluoride levels for your child's age.
